1. Cloudy Water
If you’re finding that your pool water is poor quality, even with your filter running and the chemical levels being balances frequently, this may be a sign that your filter isn’t working as it should. This is particularly the case if you’re noticing dirt and debris in the pool water. If backwashing or cleaning the cartridge element doesn’t help, you may want to call your pool technician.
2. High Pressure
With your sand filter, you need to keep an eye on the pressure gauge to check that it’s not too high. High pressure can be caused by a build-up of dirt and debris in the system, and the first thing you need to do is carry out a complete backwash. If backwashing isn’t helping and the pressure continues to rise, call in the experts to take a look.
3. Damaged Cartridge Element
If you have a cartridge filter, keep an eye on the cartridge element as it won’t work effectively if it’s damaged. Look for issues such as flattened pleats, broken endcaps or broken bands which are all signs that it’s time to replace the element. It’s always a good idea to have a spare cartridge element on hand that you can swap in easily.
4. Sand entering the Water
If you have a sand filter, one of the telling signs that there’s an issue with your filter is if you can see sand from the filter floating in your pool or settling at the bottom. This usually happens when a broken piece within the filter is allowing the sand the escape. Open the filter to have a look inside to check for damage and complete a backwash.
5. Cracks or Damage
Damage to your filter can easily occur when parts crack or become brittle over time. Check for damage to the tank, handle, valve or line of your filter and if you notice visible damage, replace the damaged part or contact your pool technician for support.
