A Few Favourite Blind Types

Rating & reviews (0 reviews)
Window blinds have been around for almost as long as windows have been! Persians would hang wet material on windows to protect from the heat and dust, Chinese in ancient times used bamboo to create slates to create a blind for privacy. When Venetians saw this when they traded in the Middle East they came back with the concept of Venetian blinds. Modern blinds developed later in the late 1700s and have continued to remain popular as they develop in material and technology and purpose. There are a number of types now too, Venetian blinds are still around but there are also many others, roller, roman blinds, blockout blinds, and honeycomb blinds to name a few.

Essential home accessory

While some people choose to use curtains, shades or such, blinds are equally valued as window treatments. They provide privacy, protect from the sun, help regulate the light coming in and help with insulation and energy efficiency. They are also there to add to the look of a room whether you want them to make a strong statement by themselves or be a part of the overall look of the room. Here is a closer look at five favourite types;

  • Roller blinds - Are made from a solid piece of material or fabric and are named because they literally roll up and down. They use a pre-loaded spring or chain to do so it is neat, there are no slats to fuss with and you can choose a lightweight material or something heavier depending on your needs.
  • Roman blinds - These blinds are made from fabric or material too and as they are raised they have slats on the back and they liftin horizontal pleats. They use a cord or chain to pull up and they offer quite good insulation in the colder months when they are kept all the way down.
  • Vertical blinds - These are also called Louvre blinds and have vertical slats with thin strips for smaller windows and then wider for larger ones. They are also good for hanging over sliding doors as they are easy to open and move out of the way. When a building has larger glass walls these blinds are good to prevent the glare that can happen.
  • Venetian blinds - These blinds are like vertical blinds but the slats run horizontally not vertically. They can be made from aluminium, wood or vinyl and can be opened so that you can better control the light that comes in. You can put them in most rooms and they look good.
  • Panel blinds - Panel blinds are good for most windows too, especially larger ones. They work the same way that vertical blinds do but panel blinds are on a track system that slides to the right or to the left and then the fabric is placed on the panel to give the screen effect. They work well as temporary room dividers for large spaces too which is why you might see them at conventions and events and such.
