Becoming a catering assistant requires several important skills. You will be working with a variety of people, ranging from wedding attendees to party guests to a corporate sponsored event. While having experience working in a restaurant or in customer service will be important, you must combine your skills to truly succeed. Here are three skills you will definitely need in order to succeed.

Punctuality does not seem like the most important skill to have, but it the first one to come into play when you work. Events start at set times, not to mention the preparation that occurs beforehand, so it is essential that everyone shows up on time and ready to work. Delays and lagging behind are not acceptable when there is work to be done and guests to be helped. Forcing your guests to wait because of slow setup or late food preparation is generally unacceptable, though providing timely help and service will most certainly leave a positive impression on guests and co-workers.

Next, each assistant must exhibit a strong work ethic. Preparations must be complete before each event starts, and no later. During the event, every assistant must be ready and able to help guests while maintaining health standards. Keeping calm under pressure is another important aspect of this skill, since many situations may require you to perform multiple tasks quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, the time will come when absences occur among staff, and having a strong work ethic will help to mitigate the loss.

Finally, interpersonal skills are vital for dealing both with your team and with the guests at any event you cater for. At all times, you should be able to communicate effectively with your fellow staff, as well as provide an excellent experience for your guests. Being polite and helpful will go a long way towards making work a positive experience, as well as giving your guests the event they deserve. Leaving a positive memory in guests' minds will ensure that they remember your service when planning their next event or party.

Now, while these aren't the only three skills that are necessary for becoming an excellent catering assistant, these points are the core of working in this industry. Other skills that you will acquire can benefit greatly from punctuality, a strong work ethic, and superb interpersonal skills. Utilize all of them in every part of your work, and you will surely succeed in this job!
