Fun Facts About The Body

While most of us are aware of the physical activities that keep us alive, you may be unaware of some of the more fascinating functions your body has. We've compiled a list of mind-boggling facts about the human body and some of its strange processes.

1. If your veins, capillaries, and arteries were put out flat, they would stretch for more than 96,561 kilometres

When your heart beats, it sends blood through your circulatory system, which is composed of blood vessels known as arteries, capillaries, and veins. These blood channels transport blood away from the heart, veins return blood to the heart, and capillaries connect them all.

2. Your heart rate and breathing rate can be synchronised with the music you're listening to

Your blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration can be affected by the music you listen to. According to medical research, changes in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems that occur when listening to music directly match the tempo of what you're hearing. Songs featuring crescendos (increases in volume and intensity), for example, may cause increases in blood pressure, pulse rate, and breathing.

3. Bacteria in your stomach can have an impact on your mood

Your stomach may actually influence your mental health. Your gut contains an enormous number of bacteria, which are referred to collectively as your microbiome. This group of bacteria may influence the following:
  • emotional behaviours
  • pain perception
  • stress.

4. Every hour, you lose 200 million skin cells, and these dead skin cells can actually help to reduce air pollution

Your skin grows quickly. You can shed up to five billion skin cells in a 24-hour period, which would be around 200 million every hour. Your epidermis (the skin's top layer) is constantly attempting to replace these lost skin cells with new ones.

With all of these functions, it is important to remember that for any discomfort or pain, you may consult your doctor or healthcare practitioner. For example, your GP may refer you to a dermatologist for a skin rash. Another possibility is that your GP may recommend a pain management clinic to help you with some common musculoskeletal health concerns.

In summary

It is interesting to be aware of some of the more fascinating facts about the body. However, it would also be a good approach to take a proactive stand in our healthcare to get the best possible results.
