Installing the Roku
Determine your type of Roku. There are two main types of Roku, which will require your television to have at least one HDMI port to use:
- Roku player : It looks like a box and comes with several cables.
- Roku Stick : It looks like a USB stick (a removable memory) and comes with at least one power cable.
The first step of the Roku setup is to connect the Roku to the HDMI port of your television. All HDTVs have at least one HDMI port. The HDMI port looks like a trapeze and is often found on the back of the television (although some televisions have the HDMI port (s) on the side).
Depending on the type of Roku, this process will vary a bit:
For Roku Player: Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the back of the Roku player box and then connect the other end to the HDMI port on the back or side of the television.
For Roku Stick: Connect the HDMI connector on the end of the Roku Stick to the HDMI port on the back or side of the television.
Most HDTVs have more than one HDMI port.
If your television does not have an HDMI port, you cannot use a Roku Stick with it. You may be able to purchase an HDMI to component adapter if your television has component ports (for example, red, white and yellow). This is because HDMI port is necessary for Roku activation.
Note the HDMI port number. On TVs that have more than one HDMI port, you will see a number next to the port where you connected the Roku.
This number can be written as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc. The television can also have the ports labeled simply with individual numbers like 1,2 .
Connecting the Roku
Connect the Roku to a power source. Both the Roku player and the Roku Stick require a connection to a power source (for example, an electrical outlet):
Roku Player: Connect one end of the power cord included in the back of the player's case and then connect the other end to an electrical outlet.
Streaming Stick (model 3800 and earlier): connect one end of the power cable included in the back of the stick and then connect the other end to an electrical outlet.
If your Roku Stick has a USB power cable and your TV has a USB port, you can connect the USB cable to the Roku Stick and the television.
Streaming Stick + (model 3810): connect one end of the power cable included in the side of the stick and then connect the other end to an electrical outlet. If your Roku Stick has a USB power cable and your TV has a USB port, you can connect the USB cable to the Roku Stick and the television.
Change to the entrance of the Roku. Turn on the television and then press the Input (input), Video or Source (source) button on the remote control (or television) and select the HDMI option in which the Roku Stick is inserted. This will open the Roku configuration screen, at which point you can start configuring it. After that you can activate the roku using the using www.roku.com/link and start streaming the content.
Set up the Roku
Select a language Using the arrow buttons on the Roku's remote control, scroll through the available languages until you find your preferred one and then press OK on the remote control.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. On the network page, do the following:
- Scan the networks by selecting Scan again to see all networks and pressing.
- Scroll through the available Wi-Fi networks until you find yours.
- Enter the password for the network using the on-screen keyboard.
- Press OK when indicated.
- If you connect a Roku player, you can also connect an Ethernet cable to the player instead of using Wi-Fi.
- Allow the Roku to be updated if necessary. Once your Roku is connected to the Internet, you will be asked to let it download the latest software. This process can take up to half an hour (or more, depending on your internet speed), so be patient.
- Confirm the configuration of the screen. If you use a Roku player, the Roku will immediately determine the best settings for your HDTV and apply it.
