Types of residential solar power systems

In Australia, there are 3 main types of solar power systems available for residential homes, Grid Connected, Off-Grid and Hybrid systems.

  1. Grid Connected Solar Power


One of the most common types of residential solar power systems, Grid Connected SoIar Power, allows the owner to export any unused power made during the day, back to the grid.  There are often financial kickbacks for doing this, however you will still rely on the mains grid for any energy consumption during the night, and will not work during black outs, unless a special hybrid system is installed.  This type is often low maintenance and easy to use, and can be tailored to suit a variety of budgets or sizes.

  1. Off Grid Solar Power


The other most common type of residential solar power, Off Grid systems are most commonly found in remote areas without access to a mains power grid.   They can also be used for standalone items on properties such as water access solutions and farming.  Off Grid systems will need battery banks or battery storage to store unused energy created during the day, to be used during the night.  Often, these systems have a backup generator attached, in case of any problems or short falls in production.

  1. Hybrid Solar Systems


Hybrid solar systems come in a couple of different varieties.  One is having an off grid solar system installed with back up, such as a generator, wind or hydro power, but the most common hybrid system in Australia is the Grid Connected Solar Power System, which allows for battery storage in order to compensate for any black outs on the main power grid, but still being able to export any excess power to the grid.
