When it comes to choosing the right size solar panel for your home, you want to ensure you’re getting the best value for money – and meeting all your home’s requirements. The average usage for electricity is 25kW per day, including around 8kW of hot water,  with the remainder equating to the amount your appliances and lighting use.

There are 2 main systems: the 3kW and 5kW. And when it comes to choosing between a 3kW or a 5kW solar system, there are advantages of both. Here are some of them so that you can make a more informed decision.

3kW system

A 3kW system has 9 - 12 panels and generates around 12.5kW per day. With the 3kW system, 80% of your energy is consumed within the household, while 20% goes back to the grid.

You’ll generally need around 15m2 to 25m2 of roof space for the panels, depending on the wattage. The amount of energy a 3kW system produces depends on a number of things – including the tilting of the panels and where they are located, how much shade they get throughout the day; even the time of year. During winter you’re going to have less sunshine than summer, and visa versa.

According to data by the Bureau of Meteorology, the average solar energy yields for homes in Brisbane, for example, is 11.6kW and your annual savings could be anywhere from $600 per annum to $900 per annum (more or less).

5kW system

A 5kW system has 20 panels and generates around 20.8kW per day. The 5kW system is 30% back to the grid and 70% consumed.

You’ll generally need around 20m2 to 40m2 of roof space for the panels, depending on their wattage. As with the 3kW system, the amount of energy it produces depends on a number of factors. The 5kW system has become one of the most popular in Australia in recent years. It is ideal for larger households and you can generally get a return on your investment within about 5 years.

Although it’s more expensive from the outset, you’re going to save more in the long run with a 5kW system. You’ll have more energy available when you need it most (such as during peak times); and there will be more energy available for battery storage so you can go completely off the grid.
